One of Greece’s most charming harbours has undergone a significant makeover. The Ministry of Culture recently wrapped up major restoration work at Nafpaktos’ Venetian Harbour, breathing new life into what is arguably the town’s most iconic landmark and a must-see for anyone visiting western Greece.

Tucked into the heart of Nafpaktos’ old town, this historic harbour sits within a larger archaeological zone that tells the story of centuries past. Two imposing bastions—the Faro and Anemogiannis—flank either side of the entrance, their fortifications a reminder of the strategic importance this place once held. Walk along the small stone quays and weathered walls, and you get a tangible sense of the town’s layered history.

What made Nafpaktos so valuable over the centuries? Location and defence. The harbour’s position and its fortifications say it all. These days, locals and visitors alike flock here for photos and to soak up the atmosphere—it’s become one of the town’s most recognisable spots.

The restoration bill came to nearly €1.9 million. The Ministry of Culture’s Directorate for the Restoration of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments handled the work, with funding split between Greece’s Recovery and Resilience Fund and the Ministry’s own investment programme.

The harbour had seen better days. Years of exposure to salt spray and seawater had taken their toll. The restoration team tackled everything from seabed rehabilitation and ground repairs to repointing masonry, replacing eroded stones, and rebuilding damaged sections of the harbour walls. Beyond just making it look better, the work shored up the structural integrity and got the harbour infrastructure functioning properly again—all while keeping its original character intact.

For visitors, the result is striking. The restored Venetian Harbour now showcases Nafpaktos at its best: a coastal town where Venetian heritage, medieval defences, and the sparkling waters of the Gulf of Corinth create something genuinely memorable.
