What would Athens feel like if one of its busiest streets belonged entirely to people for a whole day? This September, you can find out.

On September 19–20, 2026, Athinas Street, between Evripidou Street and Monastiraki, will close to cars for 24 hours, transforming the iconic central avenue into a lively, pedestrian-friendly space filled with music, movement, creativity and free activities.

The initiative, “Athinas Without Cars,” is part of the This is Athens City Festival, celebrating a different way of experiencing the city and highlighting how public spaces can become places for people to meet, explore and enjoy themselves.

The programme kicks off on Saturday evening with a special Walk at Dusk, inviting visitors to stroll along Athinas Street as the city transitions from day to night. The evening continues with a lively Disco Street Party, turning the normally traffic-filled avenue into an open-air dance floor.

For night owls, the fun continues into the early hours with an outdoor cinema experience by Midnight Express, offering overnight film screenings right in the heart of Athens.

Sunday brings a more active atmosphere, with free yoga sessions, cycling activities, skating, sports, creative workshops and family-friendly entertainment. Visitors can also take part in playful activities such as the Spin Art Bicycle Workshop, combining cycling and creativity in a fun, hands-on experience.

Beyond the entertainment, the event offers a rare opportunity to see Athinas Street without the constant flow of cars — and to experience one of Athens’ most recognisable streets at a completely different pace.

Best of all, admission is free, making it an easy weekend activity for locals, families and visitors alike.
