Travellers arriving in Athens or Thessaloniki will soon see a change in one of the first costs of their trip to Greece. Fixed taxi fares for journeys between the two cities’ airports and their centres are set to increase, with the biggest adjustment affecting passengers arriving at Athens International Airport.
The new prices have been agreed following discussions between the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and representatives of the taxi sector. They will come into effect once the relevant ministerial decision is published in the Government Gazette.
What will an airport taxi cost in Athens?
For visitors landing at Athens International Airport, the fixed fare for a taxi journey to or from central Athens will increase by €10.
The daytime rate, which applies from 5am to midnight, will go from €40 to €50. For journeys between midnight and 5am, the fare will rise from €55 to €65. The fixed rates apply in both directions, meaning the same fares are used for journeys between central Athens and the airport.
For travellers arriving late at night, this means an airport taxi will cost €65 under the new fixed rate, compared with €55 currently.
Thessaloniki sees a smaller increase
The adjustment will also affect passengers using Thessaloniki Airport “Makedonia”, although the increase is more modest.
The fixed daytime fare for a journey between the airport and central Thessaloniki will rise from €25 to €28, while the nighttime fare will increase from €35 to €38.
So, while Athens travellers will see a €10 increase in the fixed airport fare, the corresponding increase in Thessaloniki will be €3.
Other taxi charges are changing too
The new pricing schedule also includes changes to waiting charges.
The special hourly waiting charge will increase from €15 to €20, while the maximum waiting charge that can be agreed between a driver and passenger will increase from €25 to €40.
Importantly for visitors using taxis elsewhere in Greece, the standard taxi tariff is not changing. The minimum taxi charge will also remain at €4. The adjustments are specifically focused on fixed airport fares and waiting charges.
When will the new prices apply?
The new fares are not yet in effect. They are expected to become applicable once the relevant decision is officially published in Greece’s Government Gazette.
Until then, the existing fixed airport fares remain applicable.
For travellers planning an upcoming visit, however, it is worth keeping the new figures in mind when budgeting for airport transfers. A taxi from Athens Airport to central Athens will soon cost €50 during the day or €65 at night, while the equivalent journey in Thessaloniki will cost €28 or €38, depending on the time of day.
The changes apply to the fixed airport fares and do not represent a general increase across Greece’s taxi tariff.
