The European Heritage Days run from September 25 to 27, marking 30 years of Greece’s participation in the initiative. This year’s theme, “Heritage at Risk: Revive, Resist, Reimagine,” draws attention to the many pressures affecting cultural heritage today, including climate change, environmental conditions, physical deterioration and wider social changes.
The free admission applies on September 26 and 27 to state-owned archaeological sites, museums and monuments managed by the Ministry of Culture. Alongside the open doors, cultural venues and organisations around Greece are hosting a programme of activities, ranging from guided visits and educational programmes to presentations and other events.
Athens offers an additional option for visitors planning a cultural afternoon. The Acropolis Museum is taking part in the celebrations with a programme exploring everyday life in a neighbourhood of ancient Athens. Presentations will take place on September 25 in English and September 26 in Greek, with advance online booking and a regular admission fee.
There will also be a special opportunity to visit the museum free of charge on Sunday, September 27, from 5pm to 8pm. The offer covers the exhibition galleries as well as the Excavation Museum.
