Greece has claimed the top spot in Condé Nast Traveller’s Best Countries in the World 2026 Readers’ Choice Awards, reaffirming its position as one of the world’s most beloved travel destinations. With a remarkable score of 98.14, Greece secured first place in the annual ranking, ahead of Japan, Italy and Türkiye.

Published on 6 October 2026, the results celebrate the destinations that have captured travellers’ imaginations, with Greece standing out for its extraordinary combination of history, island escapes, natural beauty and contemporary culture.

From Iconic Islands to Hidden Gems

For many visitors, Greece’s appeal begins with its islands, where turquoise waters, sun-drenched coastlines and picturesque villages create the quintessential Mediterranean escape. Santorini continues to captivate travellers with its spectacular sunsets and whitewashed architecture, while Mykonos blends its rich mythology with a lively cosmopolitan atmosphere. Crete, meanwhile, offers an experience of its own, combining beautiful beaches, ancient heritage and an increasingly exciting wine scene.

Beyond these internationally recognised destinations, travellers are also discovering a different side of Greece. Paros attracts visitors seeking Cycladic charm, Hydra offers a distinctive island experience without cars, and Tinos appeals to those drawn to traditional villages, local craftsmanship and dramatic landscapes.

This growing interest in lesser-known destinations highlights the many ways to experience Greece beyond its most famous summer hotspots.

Athens: Where Ancient History Meets Modern Creativity

Greece’s appeal extends well beyond its coastline. Athens has developed into one of Europe’s most exciting urban destinations, bringing together thousands of years of history and a vibrant contemporary scene.

The Acropolis remains an essential landmark, but the capital’s character is equally evident in its independent galleries, innovative restaurants, boutique hotels and creative neighbourhoods. The development of the new National Museum of Underwater Antiquities also reflects Greece’s continuing efforts to bring its remarkable cultural heritage into the spotlight.

For international visitors, Athens offers an opportunity to experience the country’s past and present in a single trip, making it an appealing destination for city breaks as well as a starting point for island-hopping adventures.

A Destination That Continues to Inspire

Greece’s first-place ranking reflects more than its postcard-perfect scenery. Its enduring appeal lies in the diversity of experiences it offers, from archaeological discoveries and culinary traditions to island-hopping, outdoor adventures and authentic encounters with local life.

As travellers increasingly look beyond familiar destinations to discover new experiences, Greece continues to offer something for every kind of journey.

Being named the world’s best country for 2026 is a significant recognition of Greece’s international appeal and a reminder of why visitors return year after year: for its landscapes, its culture and the unmistakable feeling of being somewhere special.
