Every November, Athens becomes the meeting point for thousands of runners from Greece and around the world, all drawn by one extraordinary sporting event: the Athens Marathon. The Authentic. Combining athletic achievement with ancient history, the race offers a unique opportunity to experience Greece’s heritage in a truly unforgettable way.
A Marathon Rooted in Ancient History
The marathon’s story is closely associated with the ancient Battle of Marathon in 490 BC and the legendary messenger who is said to have run to Athens to announce the Greek victory. This enduring story inspired the modern marathon, making the Athens race particularly meaningful for runners who want to connect with the origins of the sport.
Unlike many other international marathons, the Authentic Marathon follows a historic route connecting the town of Marathon with the heart of the Greek capital. Covering 42.195 kilometres, the course challenges participants with a demanding series of uphill stretches before leading them towards one of the most spectacular finishing lines in athletics.
That finish takes place at the Panathenaic Stadium, the magnificent marble stadium that hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. Crossing the finish line here is a memorable experience, combining the satisfaction of completing a marathon with the atmosphere of one of Greece’s most important historic landmarks.
More Than Just a Marathon
The event offers opportunities for participants with different levels of running experience. Alongside the full marathon, the programme includes shorter races, making the weekend accessible to a wider community of runners, students and families.
The 43rd Athens Marathon. The Authentic will take place on 7–8 November 2026, with the 5km road race, Universities Night Run and children’s race scheduled for Saturday, followed by the marathon and 10km road race on Sunday.
Beyond the competition itself, the weekend celebrates perseverance, community spirit and the international appeal of sport. Spectators can join the excitement by cheering on runners along the route and soaking up the lively atmosphere throughout Athens.
Discover Athens Through Running
For visitors, the marathon is also an excellent reason to explore Athens beyond its famous archaeological sites. From the Acropolis and the historic streets of Plaka to contemporary neighbourhoods, cafés and local restaurants, the city offers plenty to discover before or after race weekend.
Whether you are an experienced runner, a casual participant or simply a spectator, the Athens Marathon. The Authentic is a powerful reminder that sport can connect the present with the past.
