Thessaloniki is preparing to celebrate the Olympic spirit as the 9th Olympic Day Run / Thessaloniki City Half-Marathon returns on Sunday, 22 November 2026. Bringing together Olympians, Paralympians, members of the international Olympic community and thousands of runners, the event promises a memorable celebration of sport, culture and Olympic values in Greece’s second-largest city.
Recognised as the only Olympic half-marathon in Greece, the event invites participants of all ages and fitness levels to take part in a unique sporting experience that celebrates inclusion, equality, participation and the enduring legacy of the Olympic movement.
A Race for Everyone
The 9th Olympic Day Run offers a variety of races, making it an accessible event for both experienced athletes and those looking to enjoy their first organised run. Alongside the signature half-marathon, participants can choose from the AIMS-certified 10K and 5K races.
Families and younger participants can enjoy the Family & Schools Run & Fun 1.5K, while the She Run 1.5K celebrates women’s empowerment, equality and the power of collective participation.
Inspired by the international Olympic Day initiative, which takes place in more than 150 countries under the auspices of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Thessaloniki event connects the local community with a global celebration of sport and the Olympic ideals.
Running Through Thessaloniki’s Historic Streets and Waterfront
One of the highlights of the Olympic Day Run is its setting. Participants will discover Thessaloniki through routes that showcase the city’s historic landmarks and beautiful waterfront, combining its rich cultural heritage with its vibrant contemporary atmosphere.
With the sea as a backdrop and views towards Mount Olympus, the event offers an opportunity to experience the city from a different perspective. Thessaloniki’s blend of history, urban energy and seaside scenery makes it an appealing destination for visitors looking to combine an active getaway with cultural exploration.
Beyond race day, an extensive programme of activities scheduled from October to December will connect Olympic heritage with sport, culture and education, extending the celebration throughout the city.
Promoting Thessaloniki as an International Sports Destination
The Olympic Day Run plays an important role in showcasing Thessaloniki as a destination for sports and cultural tourism. Through international participation, its distinctive Olympic identity and a broader calendar of activities, the event aims to strengthen the city’s profile as both a “Thessaloniki Olympic City” and an “Olympic Heritage Destination”.
The event is organised by the Olympic Museum of Thessaloniki in collaboration with the Municipalities of Thessaloniki and Kalamaria, the Hellenic Olympic Committee, the International Olympic Academy, the Association of Olympians, SEGAS and the International Olympic Truce Centre (DIOC Olympia). It takes place under the auspices of the International Olympic Committee, with support from Olympians, Paralympians and local sporting organisations.
