On Friday, 28 August 2026, Athens will glow under the August full moon, offering a wonderful opportunity to experience the city’s museums and ancient history after dark.
Known as the “Sturgeon Moon”, the August full moon creates the perfect setting for a different kind of evening in the Greek capital. Across Greece, the Ministry of Culture is marking the occasion with special events, extended opening hours and cultural activities at archaeological sites, museums and historic landmarks.
In total, 126 locations are taking part, with 61 hosting organised events and another 65 remaining open late, many with free admission.

National Archaeological Museum
The National Archaeological Museum is welcoming visitors with special themed tours led by its archaeologists. Highlights include a guided visit to The Pylos of Nestor: A Mycenaean Kingdom Revealed, taking visitors on a journey into the fascinating world of Mycenaean Greece.
Tours take place at 7pm and 8pm, with limited places available. The 8pm tour is free with online registration.
Acropolis Museum
The Acropolis Museum is another beautiful option for a cultural evening, allowing visitors to explore its extraordinary collection while enjoying Athens after dark. Special activities are also taking place as part of the full-moon celebrations.
Archaeological Museum of Piraeus
Heading towards the coast? The Archaeological Museum of Piraeus is also joining the celebrations, offering visitors another chance to discover Greece’s ancient past under the August moon.
