By late afternoon, mountain Greece feels a world away from the summer island-hopping circuit. Woodsmoke rises above traditional rooftops, tavernas fill with conversation, and the surrounding mountains catch the last light of the day. Winter invites you to trade beach clubs for cosy fireplaces, forest walks and leisurely meals accompanied by a glass of local wine.

Beyond its famous islands and sun-soaked beaches, Greece has a quieter side waiting to be discovered. From the stone villages of Epirus to the atmospheric settlements of Pelion, these mountain escapes are perfect for travellers seeking traditional hospitality, regional flavours and a slower pace of life.

Palaios Agios Athanasios, Pella

With restored Macedonian houses, stone-paved streets and welcoming tavernas, Palaios Agios Athanasios is one of northern Greece’s best-known winter destinations. Located near Mount Voras, it is a popular base for visitors heading to the Kaimaktsalan ski centre.

Beyond skiing, the village offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy a relaxed mountain break. Browse traditional shops, sample hearty Macedonian dishes and spend your evenings in a welcoming bar or guesthouse. The village can become lively during weekends and holidays, so consider visiting midweek if you prefer a quieter atmosphere.

Arachova, Central Greece

Set on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, Arachova combines traditional mountain architecture with a lively dining scene and boutique accommodation. Its proximity to the Parnassos Ski Centre makes it a favourite among winter sports enthusiasts, while its cafés, shops and tavernas appeal to visitors who prefer a more leisurely escape.

Look out for formaela, the local PDO-protected cheese, and enjoy a long meal after exploring the village’s picturesque streets. Arachova is also an excellent base for visiting Delphi, where the ancient sanctuary sits within a dramatic mountain landscape. For a more peaceful experience, plan your visit outside busy weekends and public holidays.

Pelion, Thessaly

Few places combine mountain charm and coastal scenery quite like Pelion. This lush peninsula is dotted with traditional villages, stone mansions and cobbled paths, with views towards both the Pagasetic Gulf and the Aegean Sea.

Makrinitsa and Portaria are particularly inviting during winter, offering traditional guesthouses, welcoming cafés and village squares made for lingering. Food is another highlight: Pelion is famous for its homemade pies, often filled with local greens or cheese, alongside hearty regional dishes.

For outdoor enthusiasts, forest trails offer opportunities for scenic walks, while the small ski area at Agriolefkes provides another reason to visit when conditions permit. Pelion’s unique appeal lies in its combination of mountain landscapes and sea views.

Elati, Trikala

Surrounded by dense fir forests on the slopes of Mount Koziakas, Elati is a welcoming mountain village in Thessaly. Traditional houses, cosy cafés and tavernas create an inviting atmosphere, while the surrounding highlands provide plenty of opportunities to explore the outdoors.

Spend your mornings walking through the village or discovering nearby forest trails before returning for a leisurely meal featuring regional specialities. Snow is possible during winter, but Elati remains appealing even on clear, cold days. Nearby Pertouli also makes a worthwhile addition to a mountain road trip.

Papingo, Zagori

Beneath the dramatic limestone towers of Mount Tymfi, Papingo is one of the most striking villages in the Zagori region of Epirus. Stone houses, slate roofs and winding lanes blend beautifully into the surrounding landscape, creating an atmospheric setting for a winter escape.

Explore the village, admire the mountain views and enjoy traditional Epirotic cooking, particularly the region’s celebrated pies. Papingo also offers access to Zagori’s historic stone bridges and spectacular natural scenery. Winter roads can be challenging, so check local conditions before travelling or planning outdoor activities.

Dimitsana, Arcadia

Perched above the Lousios Gorge in the Peloponnese, Dimitsana combines mountain scenery with a rich historical heritage. Its stone-built houses, narrow streets and traditional guesthouses make it a rewarding destination for a relaxed winter weekend.

Explore the village before venturing towards the Lousios Gorge and its historic monasteries, weather permitting. Nearby Stemnitsa is another picturesque settlement worth visiting. After a day outdoors, settle into a traditional taverna for comforting regional dishes and enjoy the slower rhythm of mountain life.

Discover a Different Side of Greece

Winter in Greece is an invitation to slow down, savour local food and discover landscapes beyond the familiar summer destinations. Whether you choose a forest-surrounded village in northern Greece or a traditional settlement overlooking the mountains of the Peloponnese, these escapes offer a wonderful combination of scenery, culture and hospitality.

Plan a long weekend, leave room for spontaneous stops and remember to check road conditions during periods of snow or ice. Sometimes, the most memorable Greek getaway is the one that ends beside a fireplace, with a delicious meal and nowhere else you need to be.
