Greece is famous for its beautiful islands, turquoise waters and sun-soaked beaches, but there is another side of the country waiting to be explored. Beyond the coastline, mountain landscapes, peaceful wetlands and charming lakeside villages offer the perfect setting for a refreshing escape into nature.

Whether you are planning a weekend road trip, looking for outdoor adventures or simply hoping to disconnect from everyday life, these five lakes in Greece are worth adding to your travel list.

1. Lake Plastira: A Mountain Escape in Thessaly

Located in the Agrafa mountains of Thessaly, Lake Plastira is one of Greece’s most picturesque destinations. Surrounded by forests, rolling hills and traditional villages, this artificial lake offers a peaceful retreat throughout the year.

Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy hiking, cycling, kayaking and canoeing, while scenic roads around the lake provide plenty of opportunities to stop for photographs. The nearby villages of Neochori and Kalyvia Pezoulas are ideal for enjoying traditional Greek cuisine and taking in the mountain views.

For a cultural excursion, visit the Monastery of Panagia Pelekiti, dramatically built into the mountainside. In autumn, the surrounding forests create a beautiful palette of warm colours, while winter brings a cosy mountain atmosphere.

2. Lake Kerkini: A Paradise for Wildlife Lovers

Located in northern Greece, in the Serres region, Lake Kerkini is one of the country’s most important wetlands and a remarkable destination for nature lovers. Created in 1932, it has become an internationally recognised habitat for a rich variety of wildlife.

More than 300 bird species have been recorded in the area, including Dalmatian pelicans, herons and numerous migratory birds. Depending on the season, visitors can enjoy birdwatching, photography and guided boat trips across the lake.

Another distinctive sight is the water buffalo that graze in the surrounding countryside. After exploring the wetlands, stop at a local taverna to sample regional dishes and experience the hospitality of northern Greece.

Lake Kerkini is particularly rewarding for travellers who prefer authentic experiences and destinations away from the usual tourist routes.

3. Lake Doxa: A Hidden Gem in the Peloponnese

For those looking for a nature escape closer to Athens, Lake Doxa in the mountainous region of Corinthia is an excellent choice. Surrounded by forests and the slopes of Mount Dourdouvana, this beautiful artificial lake offers a peaceful setting for a weekend road trip.

One of its most recognisable landmarks is the small chapel of Agios Fanourios, standing on a narrow strip of land extending into the water. Together with the surrounding mountains, it creates a picture-perfect landscape.

Visitors can enjoy lakeside walks, photography and scenic drives, or explore nearby villages such as Goura and Feneos. The area is also known for its traditional tavernas, where you can enjoy hearty regional dishes after a day outdoors.

Lake Doxa is beautiful in every season, from the fresh greenery of spring to the golden colours of autumn. It is an ideal destination for anyone seeking tranquillity without travelling too far from the capital.

4. The Prespa Lakes: Untouched Nature in Northern Greece

Located in the Florina region, close to the borders of Albania and North Macedonia, the Prespa Lakes offer a unique combination of biodiversity, traditional village life and extraordinary scenery.

The area comprises Great Prespa and Small Prespa, surrounded by mountains, wetlands and peaceful settlements. It is internationally recognised for its ecological importance and is particularly famous for its birdlife, including the impressive Dalmatian pelican.

One of the highlights is the island of Agios Achilleios in Small Prespa, accessible via a floating pedestrian bridge. Here, visitors can explore the remains of a historic basilica and enjoy panoramic views across the surrounding landscape.

The lakeside village of Psarades is another worthwhile stop, with its traditional character and tavernas serving local specialities. Visitors can spend their days exploring the villages, observing wildlife or simply enjoying the tranquillity of this remarkable corner of Greece.

Prespa is best experienced at a slower pace, making it an excellent choice for travellers who want to reconnect with nature and discover a less familiar part of the country.

5. Lake Pamvotida: Nature, History and Lakeside Charm in Ioannina

For a getaway that combines natural beauty with culture and gastronomy, Lake Pamvotida in Ioannina is a wonderful option. Located beside one of Epirus’s most charming cities, the lake provides a peaceful backdrop for a weekend filled with scenic walks, historical discoveries and delicious food.

Start with a stroll along the lakeside promenade, where cafés and restaurants offer views across the water. One of the area’s highlights is the inhabited island of Ioannina, accessible by boat. Its traditional settlements, monasteries and small museums offer a fascinating glimpse into the region’s history.

Back on the mainland, explore the historic castle of Ioannina and wander through the old town’s narrow streets. Make time to sample local specialities, particularly the region’s famous pies and traditional dishes.

Unlike more remote lake destinations, Pamvotida allows visitors to combine outdoor relaxation with cultural attractions and lively evenings, making it particularly suitable for a short city break.

Plan Your Next Nature Getaway in Greece

From the mountain scenery of Lake Plastira to the wildlife-rich wetlands of Kerkini, the peaceful shores of Lake Doxa, the unspoilt landscapes of Prespa and the cultural charm of Ioannina, Greece offers plenty of opportunities to explore beyond its famous beaches.

Each destination has something different to offer, whether you are looking for outdoor adventures, traditional villages, local gastronomy or a quiet weekend surrounded by nature.

You do not need a long holiday to experience a different side of Greece. Choose your favourite lake, plan a road trip and discover some of the country’s most beautiful landscapes, one lakeside escape at a time.
