When the summer crowds begin to disappear and Greece’s landscapes shift into warmer shades of gold, amber and green, the country reveals a quieter, more atmospheric side. Autumn brings cooler temperatures, peaceful streets and the chance to experience destinations at a slower, more local pace.

From mountain villages surrounded by colourful forests to picturesque settlements steeped in tradition, this is the season for scenic walks, cosy tavernas and long afternoons spent discovering somewhere new. Here are five Greek villages worth exploring this autumn.

1. Dimitsana, Arcadia

Set high in the mountains of Arcadia, Dimitsana is particularly atmospheric in autumn, when the surrounding forests begin to turn golden and red. The village is known for its traditional stone architecture, narrow streets and impressive views over the Lousios Gorge. It also makes a great base for exploring nearby monasteries and hiking trails.

2. Makrinitsa, Pelion

Often referred to as the “balcony of Pelion”, Makrinitsa offers sweeping views towards Volos and the Pagasetic Gulf. Autumn is an especially beautiful time to visit, with the dense forests of Pelion changing colour around the village. Wander through its cobbled paths, stop for a coffee in the central square and enjoy the slower pace of mountain life.

3. Stemnitsa, Arcadia

Another Peloponnese gem, Stemnitsa combines traditional architecture with a distinctly peaceful atmosphere. Stone-built houses, old churches and small cafés line its picturesque streets, while the surrounding mountains make it an excellent destination for nature lovers. In autumn, the landscape becomes even more inviting for long walks and scenic drives.

4. Karyes, Laconia

Tucked into the slopes of Mount Parnon, Karyes is a charming village surrounded by forests and mountain scenery. Its traditional character and quiet atmosphere make it ideal for travellers looking to experience a less-visited side of Greece. Autumn brings cooler temperatures and colourful landscapes, perfect for exploring the area on foot.

5. Vytina, Arcadia

Surrounded by fir forests, Vytina is one of the most popular mountain villages in the Peloponnese — and for good reason. Its stone houses, leafy streets and cosy tavernas create the perfect setting for an autumn weekend. Local products, hearty Greek dishes and nearby nature trails make it a particularly appealing choice as the weather cools.

Autumn in Greece is about slowing down: lingering over a meal, walking through colourful forests and discovering villages where everyday life continues at its own rhythm. For a different side of the country beyond the summer islands, these destinations are a beautiful place to begin.
