Athens has plenty of ways to keep visitors busy after sunset. But increasingly, one of the best ways to experience the city is to find a seat at a bar or roof top.

The Greek capital has just been recognised as the Cocktail Culture City of the Year 2026 in the inaugural olive Travel & Taste Awards, an accolade that reflects something travellers have been discovering for themselves for years: Athens knows how to make a drink — and, more importantly, knows how to turn it into an experience.

What makes the city particularly interesting is the character behind its cocktail scene. Athens’ bartenders have increasingly looked beyond conventional mixology, drawing inspiration from the country’s landscape, pantry and drinking traditions. Greek spirits, herbs, fruit, spices and other local ingredients find their way into menus, giving contemporary cocktails a distinctly Athenian personality.

This evolution has taken place alongside a broader transformation in the city’s nightlife. Independent bars have become destinations in themselves, with carefully designed interiors, inventive menus and a strong emphasis on hospitality. Some are tucked into small central streets; others occupy rooftops overlooking the Acropolis, offering an entirely different perspective of the city.

The recognition from olive comes at a particularly interesting time. Earlier this year, Line Athens was ranked No. 1 in the inaugural Europe’s 50 Best Bars 2026, placing Athens firmly on the map of Europe’s most exciting cocktail destinations.

Yet Athens’ appeal isn’t necessarily about chasing the most elaborate cocktail or ticking famous bars off a list. It is about the way drinking fits naturally into the city’s rhythm. A late afternoon drink can easily turn into dinner, a night out can begin with a simple aperitif, and evenings often stretch well beyond the time visitors might expect.

For travellers, that makes Athens particularly rewarding: its cocktail culture offers another way to discover the city — one glass, neighbourhood and late-night conversation at a time.
