Dreaming of a Greek island holiday but not planning to rent a car? The good news is that some of Greece’s most beautiful islands are surprisingly easy to explore on foot or by public transport. Choosing the right destination means you can spend less time worrying about parking and driving—and more time enjoying beaches, local food and island life.
Hydra
Few islands make car-free travel feel as natural as Hydra. With cars and motorcycles largely absent, life here moves at a refreshingly different pace. Wander along the stone-paved lanes from the beautiful harbour, follow coastal paths to nearby swimming spots, or hop aboard a water taxi to discover beaches further around the island. Koufonisia
On Ano Koufonisi, distances are wonderfully short and there is little reason to rush anywhere. From the village, you can walk along the coast from one beach to the next, stopping at Finikas and Fanos before continuing towards the turquoise waters of Pori. Antiparos
Antiparos proves that you don’t need a car to enjoy the Cyclades. The first glimpse of Symi’s colourful harbour is reason enough to visit. Pastel neoclassical mansions climb the hillsides above Gialos, creating one of the most distinctive arrivals in the Dodecanese. Base yourself around the harbour and much of the town can be explored on foot, while small boats unlock hidden bays and secluded beaches that would otherwise be difficult to reach.
