If you feel like you need a change of scenery, these five options are close enough that you won’t spend the whole day on the road, but different enough to make you feel like you’ve really got away.
1. Nafplio – For a Romantic Getaway
Just over an hour and a half from Athens, Nafplio is one of those destinations that works beautifully in almost every season. Wander through the narrow streets of the old town, climb up to Palamidi Fortress for the views and take a stroll along the waterfront. In autumn, with fewer crowds and milder temperatures, it’s the perfect time to explore at a slower pace.
2. Aegina – For an Island Change of Scenery
If you want to leave Athens behind without travelling too far, Aegina is one of the easiest options. A short ferry ride is all it takes to reach an island filled with picturesque villages, beaches and seaside tavernas. Don’t miss a visit to the Temple of Aphaia and a walk through Palaia Chora, the island’s former capital.
3. Loutraki – For Sea, Nature and Relaxation
Around an hour from Athens, Loutraki is ideal for a quick getaway that doesn’t require much planning. Combine a walk along the seafront with a visit to Lake Vouliagmeni or the Geraneia Mountains, and make time for a leisurely meal overlooking the water.
4. Arachova – For Mountains and a Cosy Atmosphere
As autumn sets in, Arachova takes on a special charm. Stone houses, narrow streets, cosy cafés and traditional tavernas create the perfect setting for a two-day escape from the city. And, of course, the nearby archaeological site of Delphi makes an excellent addition to the trip.
5. Chalkida – For an Easy Day Trip
Just around an hour from Athens, Chalkida is the answer for anyone who wants to get away without planning an entire trip. Take a stroll along the waterfront, explore the old town and enjoy fresh fish or seafood by the water.
