Paros

paros-mapParos (Greek: Πάρος) is the third largest island in the Cyclades complex, situated in the Aegean sea between Antiparos and Naxos. In the ancient times Paros was known for its fine white marble, which is considered to be unique in the whole world. The island is of a round, plump-pear shape, formed by a single mountain covered with rich flora. Paros is a popular tourist destination worldwide, offering various activities, restaurants, bars and hotels and a lively nightlife. Its numerous beaches make the island an ideal destination for those who enjoy water sports. Some of the most famous beaches are Chrissi Akti, Pounda, Logaras, Piso Livadi and Kolibithres. Visit Parikia, the capital of Paros, and Naousa bay, two of the most picturesque settlements of the island, with houses built according to the traditional Cycladic style. One of the main attractions of the island is the town’s principal church, the Panagia Ekatontapiliani, literally meaning “church of the hundred doors”, which is linked to myths and legends dating back to the early Christianity era. One other main attraction is the ancient marble quarries from which the major part of the remaining white marble is only used for archaeological restorations.
